Wim Lamboo (born, Leiden, 1949) and Inge Baauw (born, Rotterdam, 1970) are contemporary artists who live and work in the Netherlands.
Lamboo and Baauw work individually or together as portrait and street photographers, mainly in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe – including the Baltic States, Bulgaria, Hungary and many other countries. The photographs portray people and artists in their own environment. Their photo projects can be divided into two categories: portraits of artists, and street photography as a photodocument of its time.
In 1998, Lamboo was invited by the Lithuanian Artists Association (LAA) to stay in Vilnius as an artist in residence and work on his photo project Meetings: Portraits of Lithuanian artists. He took the portraits with an analogue camera, both in temporary studios and on the streets. The series was first exhibited in 2000 at the Vilnius Photo Gallery, accompanied by a catalogue, and the following year it travelled to the Kaunas Photography Gallery and other cities across Lithuania. During this period, Baauw photographed scenes of daily life on the streets of Vilnius in black and white. In 2010, Lamboo returned to Vilnius as an artist in residence to work on a new series of portraits, continuing his exploration of the city’s artistic life.
In 2006, Lamboo and Baauw were invited by the Lithuanian Photographers Association to attend the International Photography Symposium in Nida, titled Meeting Photography. This important recurring event has developed into an international platform where people come together to talk about the current state of photography and its role in society and culture. During the symposium, Lamboo and Baauw gave a presentation of their previously taken photographs.
This book presents a small selection of 72 colour photographs – portraits of Lithuanian artists, as well as images of daily life on the streets of Vilnius and Nida.
In recent years, Lamboo and Baauw have mainly worked on the streets or in a temporary studio, using a compact digital camera.
